[916] Intellectual Development Disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorders in Adults
The work of our research group aims to assess the clinical needs of adults with intellectual developmental disorders (IDD) or autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We have developed a Tool to Optimize Prescription in Intellectual Disability (TOP-ID) to optimize their care. TOP-ID focuses on four common and complex clinical situations, particularly in patients with severely impaired communication skills. TOP-ID was developed using a Delphi process involving iterative questioning of international experts. Using a structured process, behaviors that challenge, pain, gastrointestinal and sleep disorders, are assessed in patients with altered or impaired communication skills. A digital version of TOP-ID has been developed for use at the bedside, including a systematic deprescribing guide. The clinical utility of this tool is being evaluated. We also contribute to a multicenter project aimed at assessing the emotional development of our patients and to use gathered insights to improve treatment. Based on our clinical work at the Psychiatric Unit for Mental Development (UPDM), we aim to investigate the causes of DID at the genetic level. Another priority is to characterize the profile of adults with autism, to understand why the diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders are often made late and how to facilitate earlier diagnosis.
