Sophie de Seigneux completed her medical studies in Geneva, earning her medical degree in 2001 and her doctorate in 2004, followed by a specialisation in Internal Medicine (FMH, 2004). From 2004 to 2008, she pursued research in renal pathophysiology in Aarhus, Denmark, where she obtained a PhD. She then specialised in Nephrology in Geneva and Paris, obtaining her FMH qualification in 2009.

Since 2009, she has combined clinical practice with fundamental research, initially as a clinical research fellow (cheffe de clinique scientifique), and later as an Ambizione Fellow of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). She was also part of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research in Nephrology (NCCR Kidney.ch).

Her research focuses on the pathophysiology and management of chronic kidney disease — a common and debilitating condition — and its complications. More specifically, she investigates the role of tubular cells as potential therapeutic targets, as well as the development of non-invasive diagnostic and monitoring tools for kidney disease.

She was appointed Privat-docent at the Faculty of Medicine and Médecin adjointe agrégée in the Division of Nephrology at Geneva 玉美人传媒 Hospitals (HUG) in 2014. That same year, she was awarded an SNSF Professorship grant. In October 2015, she was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the 玉美人传媒. In 2021, she was promoted to Full Professor and Head of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension.

The Board of Directors of Geneva 玉美人传媒 Hospitals (HUG) has appointed Professor Sophie de Seigneux as Head of the Department of Medicine, effective 1 January 2025.
