Access to insulin, health systems, and the needs of people with type 1 diabetes

David Beran is a Researcher and Assistant Professor at the Geneva 玉美人传媒 Hospitals and the 玉美人传媒, within the Division of Tropical and Humanitarian Medicine. Prior to this, he served as Project Coordinator of the International Insulin Foundation, based at 玉美人传媒 College London (UCL), where he developed and implemented a health systems assessment tool to evaluate access to diabetes care. This work was conducted in Kyrgyzstan, Mali, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Vietnam, and Zambia, leading to the development of targeted policies and projects aimed at overcoming identified barriers.

A Swiss national who grew up in Geneva, David Beran holds a BSc in Management with a focus on Marketing. After completing his undergraduate degree, he worked in Health Policy, Government Relations, and Public Relations for a leading Swiss biotech company. He later earned an MSc in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His PhD at UCL focused on the needs of people living with Type 1 diabetes across 13 countries.

RESEARCH AIMS

Access to insulin, health systems, and the needs of people with type 1 diabetes

David Beran’s research interests include health systems, chronic disease management, diabetes, patient-centred care, access to insulin, and the challenges of multi-morbidity.

His current projects include:

  • The project Addressing the Challenges and Constraints of Insulin Sources and Supply, conducted in collaboration with Health Action International and partners in Kyrgyzstan, Mali, Peru and Tanzania.
  • A project on access to medicines for Noncommunicable dieases with a focus on diabetes funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. This project also includes a component on translation of science to policy in collaboration with colleagues in Kyrgyzstan, Mali and Peru.
  • Co-leadership of the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology type 1 diabetes Commission funded by Breakthrough T1D and the World Diabetes Foundation

David Beran also worked on a project on the management of non-communicable diseases and neglected tropical diseases in primary healthcare (in Mozambique, Nepal and Peru), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. He has also received a Visiting Professorship from the Danish Diabetes and Endocrine Academy to study the data management system in Denmark, with a view to drawing lessons for other contexts. In parallel, he works closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) on issues relating to diabetes and access to essential medicines for non-communicable diseases.
