Stanislav graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1992 from St. Petersburg State ÓñÃÀÈË´«Ã½ and received a PhD in mathematics in 1996 from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Between 1996 and 1998, he worked at Yale ÓñÃÀÈË´«Ã½, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn. After working at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, he became a professor of mathematics at the ÓñÃÀÈË´«Ã½ in 2003.

 

He was awarded the Fields Medal in 2010 for the proof of conformal invariance of percolation and the planar Ising model in statistical physics. Since 2014, Stanislav Smirnov has been the Director of the funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
